Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:
- Apply and understand commonly used healthcare terminology.
- Utilize current computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
- Transcribe medical letters and reports.
- Understand administrative components and features of electronic medical records
- Follow office protocol relating to professionalism, confidentiality, communication, and dispute resolution.
- Practice empathic listening and customer service skills when communicating with patients or clients.
- Handle difficult clients.
- Manage incoming and outgoing mail (postal and electronic)
- Understand and utilize office procedures for scheduling appointments, maintaining appointment records, receiving office calls.
- Understand and utilize procedures for answering, transferring, and screening office calls.
- Understand and utilize billing procedures for various offices.
- Understand Release of Information Regulations.
Admission Prerequisites:

Students must provide a high school diploma or meet the age of 19 or above, and provide proof of one of the following English Proficiency requirements:
- Students whose first language is English must provide evidence of minimum grade 10 English completion OR be at least 19 years of age or older.
- Students whose first language is not English must provide evidence they have successfully completed Grade 12 at an English-speaking institution OR complete one of the following English proficiency ability tests:
– IELTS 6.0, OR
– CELPIP 6.0, OR
– TOEFL score of at least 45, OR
– TOEFL iBT score – 78 or higher, OR
– TOEFL Paper score – 546 or higher, OR
– CELPIP score – 7 or higher, OR
– PTE score – 51 or higher, OR
– CAEL score – 50 or higher, OR
– CLB score – 7 or higher, OR
– Duolingo score – 95 or higher, OR
– Successful completion of a three-credit academic
– English Course from a Canadian accredited post- secondary institution with a minimum grade of C, OR
– Kootenay Columbia College IAP Exam with a minimum of 65%
Upon successful completion of this program, students can expect to work in:
- Private and public medical clinics,
- Hospitals, and
- Allied health practitioner clinics as a Medical Office Assistant.
