The Holistic Nutrition Certificate Program (HNCP) at Kootenay Columbia College is a 15-week course designed to introduce students to whole foods nutrition and the concept of food as medicine. By utilizing modern nutritional models and cross-cultural comparisons, this certificate enables graduates to improve their own nutritional choices and those of their family and friends or to pursue a career in the health and wellness retail industry.
During the foundational phase of the course, you will examine the fundamentals of nutrition and the role of nutrients in promoting overall wellness. You will explore the connections between food and various aspects of health, including digestion, energy levels, immune function, and mental clarity.
Upon completing the 15-week Holistic Nutrition certificate, you will gain a deep appreciation for the transformative power of nourishment. Equipped with a comprehensive understanding of holistic dietary principles, you will be prepared to advocate for health and wellness through nutrition, positively impacting your life and the lives of those around you.

15-Week HN Certificate
BMS197 – Anatomy and Physiology
This foundational course provides a detailed introduction of the levels of structural organization and characteristics of the living human organism. Students will be introduced to anatomical terminology, basic biochemistry, cellular anatomy and physiology. This course will conclude with a study of the integumentary system and bone tissue.
HN100 – Fundamentals of Holistic Nutrition
This comprehensive course provides an overview of holistic nutrition practices. Drawing on both Eastern and Western paradigms of food therapy as well as food monographs, the course introduces students to the use of food as medicine and examines constitutional tendencies. Emphasis is on using real, whole foods to maintain balance and to prevent and treat disease. Students will explore nutrition in the context of individual body ecology, eating patterns, lifestyle factors, and local and global practices and trends.
HN101 – The Science of Food and Digestion
In this course, students will learn about the constituents of the whole food at macromolecular and micro molecular levels. To understand the mechanism of digestive system and its associated disorders. To begin to explore where nutrients come from, as well as their importance for particular tasks in the body and problems faced by deficiencies.
HN102 – Food As Medicine
This course focuses on the core of holistic nutrition: learning to choose foods that promote an individual healthy lifestyle. It covers both modern and traditional nutrition modalities, such as Paleo-primal diets, Low-carb, and High-protein diets for various conditions. Further, it covers the application of ancient medicinal methods such as Ayurvedic and Chinese Traditions, as well as current methods that relate to holistic individuality. Students will learn how to build their own dietary regimes and relate to food in way of supporting the long-term Life of body-mind-soul.
HN103 – Psychology of Nutrition I (Eating Addiction: A Holistic Approach to Recovery)
This course explores various unhealthy eating habits, patterns and addictions. Students will gain a deeper understanding of eating addictions and disorders from a holistic perspective. They will also learn practical strategies for helping clients move toward a healthier relationship with food and their bodies.
HN104 – Lifecycles I: (Weight Management: From Diet to Lifestyle)
This course explores weight management from a lifestyle and lifecycle perspective—moving beyond diet and towards sustained, healthy body weight. It covers the conditions of being underweight and overweight, as well as the science of weight gain and loss from traditional and biomedical perspectives. Students will explore the flaws of calorie counting, and focus on the new science behind weight loss, understanding metabolism, lifestyle factors and exercise levels. Emphasis will include using individualized eating and lifestyle plans to maintain an optimal body weight with minimal struggle.
HN105 – Food Allergies & Sensitivities I
This course explores common food allergies, intolerances and sensitivities, including their consequences for the body and mind. It covers methods for identifying, managing, and treating allergic and sensitivity reactions.
HN106 – Diet Evaluation and Food Coaching
This course looks at the fundamentals of diet evaluation and food coaching. It covers strategies for finding clients; strategies for coaching clients about their main health issues and goals; and principles of diet evaluation. Students will learn and practice skills needed to help others implement healthy eating plans. They will also develop client forms, questionnaires, and other supporting materials.
HN107 – Nutritional Supplements
This course will explore the value of nutritional supplements with emphasis on key terms, labeling and manufacturing, vitamin & mineral combinations, accessory nutrients, as well as the application of supplements in practice.

Admission Requirements:
Students are required to be 19 years of age prior to the start of the program or possess a high school diploma (or equivalent), and provide evidence of one of the following English proficiency requirements:
- Completion of grades 9-11, including English 10 with a grade of ‘C’ or higher from a country where English is one of the principal languages (see list below), or
- Completion of 2 years of full-time post-secondary education at an accredited institution where English is the language of instruction, or
- Provide verified results for one of the English language proficiency tests listed below. Test results must be dated no more than two years before the start date of the program:
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic – Minimum overall score of 5.5
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) IBT – Minimum overall score of 46
- Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL) – Minimum overall score of 40
- Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) Listening 6, Speaking 6, Reading 5, and Writing 5.
- Duolingo English Test (DET) – Minimum overall score of 95
- Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic – Minimum overall score of 43
- Cambridge English Qualifications: B2 First exam (FCE) – Minimum overall score of 160 or “C”

Admission Prerequisites:
Students must provide a high school diploma or meet the age of 18 or above, and provide proof of one of the following English Proficiency requirements:
- For domestic students, a minimum grade 10 English, or
- For English as a second language students, English proficiency ability (one of the following):
- IELTS 6.0 (with no band test score less than 5.5), or
- Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: a minimum score of 46, or
- Canadian English Language Proficiency Index (CELPIP) 6.0, or
- Cambridge English Scale: score of 150 or higher 0r
- Cambridge English: Advanced score of grade C, or
- Cambridge English: Business Vantage score of grade C, 0r
- TOEFL score of at least 45
- TOEIC score of at least 605
- Duolingo English Test Score of 80 or higher.
- Official transcripts of secondary and post-secondary education are sent directly to the Kootenay Columbia College Registrar.
Admission Requirements:
- Physician’s certificate of health (Western, Chinese, or Naturopathic physician); a general statement of your current state of physical and mental health; severe allergies must be mentioned in it
- Two letters of recommendation (sent directly to KCCIHS)
Application fee of $100.00 CDN (non-refundable) payable to KCCIHS. - Out-of-country applicants should submit the application fee in the form of a money order in Canadian Funds. In case you have difficulty obtaining Canadian funds please contact KCCIHS. The Registrar may request a personal or telephone/Skype interview with any applicant.
