The English as a Second Language (ESL) Upper-Intermediate Program is intended for students who wish to upgrade their language skills in all four skill areas: reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
This program does not require approval by the Private Training Institutions Regulatory Unit (PTIRU) of the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills. As such, PTIRU did not review this program.

1. What is the main focus of the ESL Upper-Intermediate program?
The ESL Upper-Intermediate program is designed to refine students’ English proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. It focuses on enhancing fluency, comprehension, and advanced grammar structures to prepare students for academic studies, professional settings, and social interactions with confidence.
2. Who is this program designed for?
This program is ideal for students who have a solid foundation in English and want to advance their communication skills to a higher level. It is suitable for those who have completed the ESL Intermediate Program at KCC or meet the required English proficiency standards.
3. What skills will I develop during the program?
Students will strengthen their ability to:
- Understand spoken English in diverse accents and fast-paced conversations.
- Communicate fluently and confidently in discussions, debates, and presentations.
- Master complex grammatical structures, such as conditionals, passive voice, and reported speech.
- Use advanced vocabulary, idioms, and phrasal verbs for precise and effective communication.
- Analyze detailed texts and write clear, structured essays, reports, and formal documents.
Upon completion of this program, the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:
- Understand spoken English in diverse accents and fast-paced conversations.
- Achieve greater fluency, natural intonation, and confidence in discussions and presentations.
- Master complex grammatical structures, such as conditionals, passive voice, and reported speech.
- Use advanced vocabulary, idioms, and phrasal verbs to communicate with precision.
- Analyze detailed texts and produce clear, coherent essays, reports, and formal correspondence.
Students are required to be 19 years of age prior to the start of the program or possess a high school diploma (or equivalent) AND
- Completion of the KCC English as a Second Language (ESL) Intermediate
Program or - Completion of grades 9-11, including English 10 with a grade of ‘C’ or higher from a country where English is one of the principal languages, or
- Completion of 2 years of full-time post-secondary education at an accredited institution where English is the language of instruction, or
- Evidence of graduation from a language program with an established pathway/articulation agreement allowing direct entry (no further testing required) to a diploma or degree program at a public institution in Canada, or
- Provide verified results for one of the English language proficiency tests listed below. Test results must be dated no more than two years before the start date of the program:
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic – 4.5+
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) iBT – 35+
- Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) – 35+
- Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) –
