The English as a Second Language (ESL) Intermediate Program is intended for students who wish to upgrade their language skills in all four skill areas: reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
This program does not require approval by the Private Training Institutions Regulatory Unit (PTIRU) of the Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills. As such, PTIRU did not review this program.

1. What is the main focus of the ESL Intermediate program?
The ESL Intermediate program is designed to help students strengthen their English language skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The course focuses on improving fluency, grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension to enhance communication in academic, professional, and social settings.
2. Who is this program designed for?
This program is ideal for students who have a basic foundation in English and want to advance their proficiency for higher education or career opportunities. It’s suited for individuals who have completed the ESL Beginner Program at KCC or meet the required English language proficiency criteria.
3. What skills will I develop during the program?
Students will enhance their ability to:
- Understand spoken English in conversations, media, and formal settings.
- Improve fluency, pronunciation, and intonation for more natural speech.
- Master intermediate grammar for clearer and more structured communication.
- Expand vocabulary, idioms, and phrasal verbs for better expression.
- Develop strong reading comprehension and writing skills for academic and professional use.
Upon completion of this program, the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:
- Understand spoken English in conversations, media, and formal settings.
- Improve fluency, clarity, and natural intonation in speech.
- Master intermediate grammar for clear, structured communication.
- Expand vocabulary, idioms, and phrasal verbs for natural expression.
- Enhance reading comprehension and write clear, well-structured texts.
Students are required to be 19 years of age prior to the start of the program or possess a high school diploma (or equivalent) AND
- Completion of the KCC English as a Second Language (ESL) Beginner Program or
- Completion of grades 9-11, including English 10 with a grade of ‘C’ or higher from a country where English is one of the principal languages, or
- Completion of 2 years of full-time post-secondary education at an accredited institution where English is the language of instruction, or
- Evidence of graduation from a language program with an established pathway/articulation agreement allowing direct entry (no further testing required) to a diploma or degree program at a public institution in Canada, or
- Provide verified results for one of the English language proficiency tests listed below. Test results must be dated no more than two years before the start date of the program:
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic – 3-4.5
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) iBT – 25-35
- Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) – 21–35
- Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) – Listening 3–4, Speaking 3–4, Reading 3–4, Writing 3–4
- Duolingo English Test (DET) – 55–75
- Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic) – 26–35
- Cambridge English Qualifications (FCE, CPE) – Below B1 (CEFR Level)
- Cambridge Linguaskill – Below A2
