From High School to Healing Hands: Meet Hayden, First-Year RMT Student

At Kootenay Columbia College, stories of passion and perseverance are part of our daily rhythm, and Hayden’s journey into the Registered Massage Therapy (RMT) program is no exception. Hayden is a first-year RMT student who brings with him a deep-rooted inspiration, a love for the Kootenays, and a clear goal: to help people through healthcare, just like his mom did.

A Kootenay Kid with a Calling

Born in Vancouver and raised in Trail, Hayden grew up watching his mother work as a physiotherapist, a career that planted early seeds of purpose. “Seeing her help people and knowing she could help me too… that’s where it started. That’s when I realized I wanted to help others too,” Hayden shares.

While massage therapy and physiotherapy are distinct paths, Hayden recognizes the shared essence between them: healing and human connection. And with strong ties to the Kootenays, he knew he didn’t want to go far to follow that dream. “I wanted to learn in my own community. To be a part of something close to home.”

Eyes on the Future and Beyond

Though deeply connected to his roots, Hayden isn’t afraid to branch out. He’s already thinking ahead, and transferring to a University is part of the plan.

“I’m excited about the transfer option. After this program, I want to pursue a Health Science degree. It’s about expanding my knowledge, seeing new places, and continuing to grow.”

Straight Outta High School and Into the Deep End

Here’s where Hayden’s story takes a powerful turn: he entered the RMT program straight from high school.

And he doesn’t sugarcoat it. “High school was tough. I had to work really hard to keep up, stay organized, and push through. But that taught me how to hustle, and I brought that here with me. Only now, everything’s leveled up. No bells. No reminders. Just you, your schedule, and your discipline.”

He describes the transition as humbling and challenging, but also incredibly rewarding. “It makes you feel good to succeed. But it’s hard. You’re constantly pushing yourself.”

Advice to Future Students: Know What You Want

Hayden has a message for anyone considering jumping into an RMT program right after high school: Do it, but only if you’re sure. “There’s no shame in taking time off, but I didn’t want to lose momentum. I wanted to keep the learning alive, and I’m glad I did. That said, this program is no joke. You need to love it. You need to want to be here.” He emphasizes the importance of doing your research. “If you’re not passionate, it’s going to wear you down. Even when you do love it, there are tough mornings, long nights, and sacrifices. But it’s worth it if it’s your passion.”

What’s Next?

As Hayden continues through his first year, one thing is clear: his determination is as strong as his compassion. With eyes set on helping others, a future degree, and staying connected to his community, Hayden is a shining example of what’s possible when passion meets perseverance. So, here’s to early mornings, late nights, and all the people out there just like Hayden, learning, growing, and preparing to make a difference.
