A Journey into Massage Therapy and Holistic Healing

From Tree Planting to Healing Hands 3

A Deep Dive into Mind-Body Learning

Zoe is the first to admit that returning to academics wasn’t an easy shift after years in the field. But surprisingly, it’s the rigor of the RMT program that has brought her the most satisfaction.

“I really enjoy the academic part. Learning anatomy, neurophysiology, it’s so intense but also fascinating. At the same time, I’m realizing how much more there is to healing than just the physical side. That’s what draws me in. Massage therapy is such a beautiful starting point for understanding how emotional, spiritual, and physical health all connect.”

This whole-person approach to healing is central to Zoe’s vision for the future. Though she’s still exploring her long-term plans, one thing is clear: her passion lies in supporting others in spaces where traditional and alternative care intersect.

“I’d love to combine massage therapy with counselling or somatic therapy. I’m drawn to that deeper work, where mind and body meet. The more I learn, the more I see how healing is never just physical.”

Healing for the Workers of the Wild

Perhaps one of the most compelling pieces of Zoe’s story is her dream of bringing massage therapy back to the world of tree planting, not just as a former worker who understands the toll it takes, but as a healer who can offer tangible relief.

“When I was planting, I always thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be amazing if there was an RMT at camp?’ People are hurting up there, pushing their limits every day. They need help, and they deserve care. I don’t know if any camps actually hire massage therapists, but I’d love to be part of creating that possibility.”

Even if there’s no formal role yet, Zoe envisions a future where she can simply show up, with a massage chair and a willingness to support her community.

“That’s part of what inspired me to go into this, I wanted to give back to the people I planted with, to be someone who understands what their bodies go through and can offer something real in return.”

When Zoe, originally from Ottawa, Ontario, first arrived in Nelson, she didn’t know she’d soon be launching herself into a deeply transformational journey, one that would connect her academic curiosity, nomadic spirit, and desire to help others into a single, powerful path: massage therapy.

Zoe’s story is not one of a straight line, but rather of discovery, both personal and professional. Before enrolling in the Registered Massage Therapy (RMT) program at Kootenay Columbia College (KCC), she spent several years tree planting across British Columbia. That rugged, repetitive, physically intense work took a toll on her body but left an impression on her soul. It planted a seed: what if there was a way to both recover from and give back to that kind of demanding lifestyle?

“I was living pretty nomadically,” Zoe reflects. “Tree planting brought me to BC, but I started craving something more grounded, something with structure, something that would still let me help people in a meaningful way.”

Massage therapy had always been in the background of her life. With a family member in the profession, she was familiar with its benefits, but it wasn’t until she discovered KCC’s RMT program, right in the community she had grown to love, that the idea came fully into focus. “I’ve always had this draw to massage, even as a kid. And then I found this program here in Nelson after I had already moved, it just felt right. It was the perfect blend of science, hands-on care, and holistic healing.”

A Cohort That Lifts You Up

For Zoe, the community she found at Kootenay Columbia College has made all the difference. Her cohort of fellow students is, as she describes it, “wholesome, collaborative, and incredibly supportive.” Far from competitive, the group has cultivated an environment where learning is shared, and successes are celebrated together.

“There’s something really special about being in a room full of people who all want to be nurturing and supportive, not just to their future clients but to each other. We help each other with notes, with tests, with just getting through it. That makes this journey feel sustainable.”

She also praises her instructors, especially Mary, Krystal, and Kevin, for making dense, challenging material feel engaging and accessible. “Mary makes neuro exciting,” Zoe smiles. “That’s not easy.”

Letting the Journey Unfold

When asked what advice she’d give to others considering a similar path, Zoe doesn’t offer quick fixes or polished slogans. Instead, her message is heartfelt, reflective, and grounded in experience: “You don’t have to have it all figured out. You just have to start. Trust the process. Let yourself change. And surround yourself with people who inspire you, second-year students, working RMTs, instructors. Seeing what’s possible in others helps you discover what’s possible in yourself.”

It’s clear that Zoe’s journey into massage therapy is only beginning, but she’s already embodying the very heart of holistic care, listening deeply, holding space, and leading with compassion. As she continues through the RMT program at Kootenay Columbia College, one thing is certain: whether in the classroom, the clinic, or back among the trees, Zoe Tressa is building a career and a life rooted in healing.
